New York’s Sanitation Department reported on October 2022 more than 21,600 rat complaints. That’s a roughly 71% increase since October 2020. Recently, New York City posted a job listing for a new “director of rodent mitigation”, to work under the direction of Mayor Eric Adams and his deputy mayor for operations, Meera Joshi. In simple terms, rats have become a major problem in New York City and desperate times call for desperate measures. There have been plans set in place to hopefully help solve this problem, but seeing how severe and harmful it has become can we simply rule out other options? This is where our device can come in and better execute the goal in mind.
One bill would require the city to establish formal rat mitigation zones across New York City.
The city would be required to report on rat mitigation progress in rat mitigation zones.
Trash receptacles in buildings identified as having a high concentration of repeated rodent infestation to be made of a material or design to minimize rodent infestation.
Before certain construction permits are issued, the applicant must certify that a licensed exterminator has been retained.
The device primarily aims to stop rodents and insects from coming out of drains into surrounding areas by sealing the source of the entrance, while still allowing them to get back into the drains. In addition, it also prevents harmful odors from escaping from rainwater and sewage drains, gullies, and manholes. The device is also suitable for retaining swelling sewage water from getting onto the surface.
The device has been working in the sewage system of the Sewage Company Budapest for more than 8 years without any issues.
The device is adapted to the requirements of the respective manhole cover. The installation can take place with or without a special frame beneath the manhole cover. The fixation is accomplished by the manhole cover itself or with small hooks on the sidewalls/frame. The device can be removed any time from the manhole with a special hook, cleaned & reinserted.
The invented device in the dwell position is closed ensuring that rodents, insects, and odors do not escape from the compact sewage system. Under operation the shafts are open, however, water pouring into the drains stops rodents and insects from getting out. The double valve system of the device also impedes wastewater from bursting out onto the surface in case of sewage water swells. The double valve system will open if water or waste water flows in from the surface at the rate of the quantity of the incoming water and will let the liquid into the drains. If the liquid stops flowing in, the shafts close again and will only open under external force.
The sewage system is an open system through the gullies and manholes, so rodents and insects in the sewage system may escape onto the surface and into the human environment.
The rodents may spread diseases and may cause harm to the public.
The sewage system, when the water is not sufficient to remove and forward the offal, may end up releasing harmful odors.
The device is suitable to block the gullies and harmful odors coming from the sewage system.
If the sewage system is overloaded, or in the case of seaside cities, the sewage system is not able to lead the water into the sea. The wastewater may then overflow out from the system/gullies.
This calls for more maintenance and disinfection.
